SYNOPSIS

Dominican Republic 1948-49, in the sugar cane fields of the island the life of 2 peasants couples, one Dominican and the other from Haiti, are crossed in this interesting history. Samuel, a young honest and moral Dominican peasant, faces the injustice of Trujillo’s dictatorship rules. Outraged by the abuse of a group of guards from the oppressive regime; unintentionally, he kills one of its members, event that forced him to flee and leave his wife Elena and children behind. For a whole year he hides in a remote fishing island in the Caribbean Sea where he meets Maria Fernanda a beautiful native widow and her little daughter Maria. In a threat to begin a new relationship, he decides to return to his family but he doesn’t know what terrible things awaited him.

DIRECTOR


Fernando Báez Mella, 23/01/57 recognized Director of Cinema of the Dominican Republic. He comes from a photographers and cinematographs long family. His grandfather, Tuto Báez realizes the first full-lenght film in the Dominican Republic and nowadays his 6 children are dedicated to the business of the cinema, television and advertising, In his producing house (poduction company) UNICORN FILMS. He continues his studies of Cinema and television in New York and in Rockport College, Maine, where he has realized master’s degree in Direction of Photography, edition and assembly(staging), Master Class in Photographic Direction for cinema HD ” following-up to a long family tradition.


He has played important charges on the principal television stations of the Dominican Republic as television director and Production manager in channels like Color Visión, Rahintel, Channel 13 and Teleantillas where he started his career. He has received important recognitions for the accomplishment of his Tv programs, television specials, short films, documentaries and now in full-lenght films(movies).


Productive film director of Dominican cinema with a wide list of documentary work for cinema and television that exceed’s the 200 projected titles. Recognized nationally and internationally for works like ” The National Image ” ” Images for a testimony ” (Biennial prize) ” History and tradition of the Dominican Tobacco “, ” A Carnival soul village”, ” Máximo Gómez destiny’s son “, “TIME TO HARVEST” which received the statuette “Casandra 2009”., and his masterpiece “THE KING OF NAJAYO” wich releases the new law of cinema in the Dominican Republic.


Passionate environmental activist he is a documentary maker of submarine works that have showed the beauties and richnesses of the Dominican Republic seafloor. Báez is also known by the television institutional commercials of important Dominican companies distinguished (being outlined) for the particularity of his photographic quality and the content of his messages. It is necessary to emphasize his particular stamp in the Dominican Republic tourism campaigns.


Recognized and rewarded internationally by his television political presitential level campaigns, for the Dominican Presidents Leonel Fernandez Reyna and Danilo Medina. He was rewarded by the prizes “POLLIE AWARD” and the “AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF POLITICAL CONSULTANTS”. His masterpiece THE KING OF NAJAYO received the 3 award nominations to the Dominican Republic cinema prizes the SOBERANO 2013 for “BEST FILM” “BEST DIRECTOR” and “BEST ACTOR” Beside being favored by the critique as ” One of the best Dominican movies of all the times “.


Báez has more than 4 years working the script of Sugar Cane Flower, It has been a dream come true to be able to have started the shooting of this beautiful and so significant project. Among) his last projects we can find“Enriquillo Lake: Prelude of the Climate change” That was released last 2014, released in the Frame of the celebration of the ” XIIth Dominican Congress of Geographical Sciences”. Organized by the National Dominican Section of the Pan-American Institute of Geography and History, specialized agency of the Organization of American States (OEA), getting a recognition for the environment contribution. Also projected in the IV Dominican environmental cinema sample, an initiative of GFDD Funglode, where it was also recognized. Right now its participating in several Mexican international festivals (Official selection FICMA LATAM,Guanajuato), Spain and soon in the United States of America.
